Meaning of your Greenstone Hei Matau Necklace:
Fishing was a sacred part of the Maori culture and the Maori people of New Zealand have long considered the Hei Matau or Fish Hook a symbol of prosperity, fertility, good luck and safe travel over waters. It represents their land and the relationship they have with Tangaroa; God of the Sea.
Legend has it that the North Island of New Zealand was once a large fish caught by Maui, the great Mariner using only a woven line and a fish hook carved from the bone of his Mother. The Hei Matau is in the shape of Hawke’s Bay situated in New Zealand’s North Island and represents the fish hook which caught the big fish on it’s side. Greenstone is so significant to the Maori culture that symbolic pieces are handed down from generation to generation.
Your Greenstone Hei Matau Necklace:
Handcrafted by Rose McCallum and Jordan Harrison, this beautiful genuine piece of Greenstone/Jade/Ponamu has been designed and hand carved into a traditional Hei Matua/ Fish Hook. The Greenstone has been respectfully and legally sourced from New Zealand’s Arahura River situated on the West Coast of the South Island.
It is just over 4.5cm in length and 2.5cm in width. It is beautifully smooth and polished all over. The colours are truly stunning with the top half consisting of a mesmerising see through light green layering down to a dark green, finished at the bottom with a white and green hue. A handcrafted customised rustic sterling silver clasp joins your piece to a thick 5mm leather necklace with a stainless steel magnetic locked in clasp.
A beautiful and life long symbolic piece that will be worn for the forever and kept for generations to come.
*Please note the leather necklace cannot be removed from the Hei Matau symbol*
